When you live in a gorgeous Katy gated community like Willow Park Greens, you probably don’t expect to face any plumbing problems. The tranquil neighborhood and the beautiful newer homes can fool you into thinking every home system will run smoothly indefinitely.
Unfortunately, even a newer home can face plumbing problems. A home is a delicate system with many moving parts; sometimes, things go wrong—including clogged drains.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep drains clean and clear so you can reduce the number of times you need to call your local Katy plumbers to come out and fix a clogged drain problem.
Scrape Your Plates and Get a Drain Strainer
It’s no big deal if some food gets down your drain. Your garbage disposal can handle some fragments, and other fragments will get chewed up by your garbage disposal. But every bit of food that slides down your drain increases the workload on your pipes.
So scrape before you sink, and get a drain strainer to handle the fragments you miss. Dump it out periodically.
Know Your Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals just can’t handle as much as people think they can. You should never put eggshells, coffee grounds, meat, bones, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, or paper products in your garbage disposal.
The disposal just can’t handle these items effectively, and it will eventually clog if you keep trying to toss these items inside.
Dispose of Grease Properly
Soap can dissolve a little bit of grease, but it will never get all of it. Every drop of grease poured down your drain is a drop of grease that will eventually harden into a big, nasty clog.
Rinse Your Drains
After each wash, running hot water down the drain helps you eliminate small food particles. If someone has sent something down the drain that shouldn’t have gone, you can pour some near-boiling water down the drain once a week to help move those bad boys along.
Keep it Natural
Many companies want to sell you harsh Uber cleaners, but we recommend keeping strong cleaners out of your drains. Vinegar, baking soda, and plain dish soap are just fine for cleaning your drains and sinks, and using them will prevent problems if your plumber has to get down there.
Please avoid harsh chemicals. They can corrode your pipes and cause additional clogs from all that corrosion. If you know what you’re doing, you can try a plumbing snake, but be careful. It’s easy to damage your drains with a plumbing snake, too.
